Patch 1.1: Percent Completion, Over-Learning, & Sandboxing
Welcome to Patch Notes, where we cover practical ideas to master any skill, create your best work, and outlevel your stats in life.
Here are 3 ideas you can implement today, in under 3 minutes as promised…
- PATCH 1.1.1: Percent Completion -
In some rare cases, 100% perfection is essential. Piloting a plane. Skydiving. Anything where lives are at risk - but these are edge cases.
80% perfect is more than enough in most cases. Higher and you risk indefinite delays and timing yourself out; lower and you risk releasing below expectations and creating future problems.
When you’re stuck in a cycle of “better”, ask: “Did I hit my 80%?” If so, do a quick pass to catch any glaring errors, release, and move on.
- PATCH 1.1.2: Over-Learning -
With any new skill, drill the parts that come up frequently until they become instinct. When learning a language, you probably don’t have to recall technical language quickly, but unless grammar comes automatically, everything else slows down.
Solidify the most common micro-skills until you can do them in your sleep. Every other aspect of that skill will become easier as a result.
What micro-skills can you over-learn to multiply your impact in every other aspect?
(Scott Young covers this concept in detail in his excellent book, Ultralearning)
- PATCH 1.1.3: Sandboxing -
Physics and interactions are the lifeblood of any sandbox game. Developers define how things sound, connect, explode, or transform when they come into contact with one another (Tears of the Kingdom nailed it).
Know what resources you have and how they interact, then knock them together mercilessly until you find combos that click. Your preferences help you learn your own style, which is crucial for determining how you’ll make your mark.
What combinations haven’t you tested yet? What can you create by deliberately doing things the “wrong” way?
Let me know which patches resonated with you - it helps me make future editions of Patch Notes as practical and relevant as possible.
